VISION3D Debuts at the 12th Automotive Advanced Manufacturing Technology Summit: Automated 3D Measurement Empowers Body-in-White Digital Upgrading

Time:

As the automotive industry undergoes accelerated transformation, the manufacturing system is experiencing a profound restructuring. Driven by the continuous advancement of electrification, intelligence, connectivity, and shared mobility — compounded by supply chain reshaping, growing demand for personalization, and sustainable development goals — automotive manufacturing is shifting from a scale-driven model to one that places equal emphasis on efficiency and quality. The sophistication, flexibility, and data maturity of manufacturing capabilities have become key competitive differentiators.

Against this backdrop, the 12th Automotive Advanced Manufacturing Technology Summit 2026, hosted by ATC Automotive Technology Platform, took place in Guangzhou from March 25 to 27. The summit focused on the four core manufacturing processes — stamping, welding, painting, and final assembly — bringing industry experts together to explore intelligent equipment maintenance and the roadmap for smart factory implementation.

On March 26, Hao Tian, Sales Director and Deputy General Manager of VISION3D, delivered a keynote speech titled "Optical Automated Inspection Drives Body-in-White Digital Smart Manufacturing," offering an in-depth exploration of critical quality control challenges in body-in-white (BIW) manufacturing and how automated 3D measurement is being integrated into automotive production processes, driving the shift from inspection-driven to data-driven manufacturing.

The Evolving Role of 3D Measurement: From End-of-Line Quality Check to Core Manufacturing Enabler

Hao Tian explained that as automotive manufacturing continues to evolve, the role of 3D measurement is undergoing a fundamental transformation. With the widespread adoption of high-strength steel and complex structural components, the industrialization of new processes such as integrated die casting, and ever-accelerating production cycles, dimensional control on the shop floor faces increasingly stringent requirements. Measurement is no longer merely an end-of-line process — it is steadily moving into the core of manufacturing, becoming a critical data gateway connecting design, production, and quality.

Addressing this shift, VISION3D has built a comprehensive solution centered on "high-precision 3D data acquisition + automated measurement and analysis." On the acquisition side, the PowerScan blue-light 3D scanner delivers high-quality point cloud capture of critical features such as holes, slots, trimmed edges, and threaded holes, achieving single-frame measurement accuracy of up to 0.005 mm, ensuring precision even under complex structural conditions. On the analysis side, the AutoScan automated 3D measurement system streamlines the entire workflow — from data acquisition, alignment, and comparison to analysis — enabling unattended measurement and continuous process data monitoring. Through this combination, measurement extends beyond single-part inspection to become a data foundation for understanding production line status and supporting manufacturing optimization.

In BIW manufacturing, VISION3D's automated 3D measurement solutions have already been deployed across multiple stages. At the incoming inspection stage, a robot-mounted PowerScan blue-light 3D scanner, combined with flexible fixturing and rotary table systems, performs automated dimensional inspection on a wide range of components, improving inspection efficiency while ensuring result consistency. At the in-line stage, for body frame assemblies, group measurement of over 200 key inspection points is completed within 30 seconds, while full-scale inspection of over 2,000 measurement points is finished within 20 minutes — delivering high-density measurement capability at high production cycle rates.

Furthermore, the coordinated deployment of BIW inline 3D inspection and the AGV-based four-door-two-hood inspection system enables continuous monitoring of critical structural components during production. For features such as mounting holes, threaded holes, and key matching points, repeatability accuracy is controlled within 0.1 mm for over 90% of measurements. In gap and flush inspection, the system achieves 100% inline detection of DTS key measurement points and functional dimension points, replacing traditional manual go/no-go gauging, while feeding measurement data back to upstream assembly and adjustment stations in real time, driving continuous optimization of assembly quality.

Building on these capabilities, VISION3D has further extended measurement into the manufacturing process itself. Through alignment analysis between measurement data and the original CAD model, the system automatically identifies machining allowances and generates subsequent machining paths, which are then communicated to on-site operations via laser marking and other methods — achieving a continuous chain from inspection and analysis through to correction. Measurement results directly inform production decisions, significantly accelerating problem response times and improving process optimization efficiency.

Underpinning this suite of applications is VISION3D's progressively refined product portfolio. Today, the company offers a complete product matrix spanning handheld devices, automated measurement systems, and high-precision 3D scanning equipment, with continuous optimization in accuracy, speed, and robustness against complex environmental conditions, capable of covering a wide range of application scenarios from the lab to the production floor.
